Music fans all over Latin America know “El Boba” as the long-time percussionist for Grammy winner Juan Luis Guerra and his band 440. Dominican radio fans also know him as the host of the popular “Quisqueya FM” radio program “El Boba y tú”. But prior to working on our film, Boba had little or no experience as an actor.
Boba and Ricardo also met during Andy García’s “The Lost City,” where Boba was the musical coordinator, and also performed in many of the musical numbers.
One evening, after wrap, Boba kept the crew laughing for nearly an hour with an extremely funny monologue about his misadventures while on tour with Juan Luis Guerra, after which Ricardo walked up to him and said: “Some day I’m going to make a movie and put you in it.” Less than a year later, Boba was in San Juan starring as “Jose Peña” (which coincidentally was Steven Bauer’s character in “¿Qué Pasa, USA?”).
